Google mobile search adds support for geolocation on Windows Phone Mango
It appears Google has recently turned on the geolocation feature at its mobile search site for Windows Phone Mango users. Previously this feature was not shown to Windows Phone users but now Mango-ers will be able to search Google local business listings without having to type their current location. Adopting the drafted W3C Geolocation API specifications, Internet Explorer 9 recently introduced support for this to support a common Javascript API to access the location of users using cellular, WiFi and/or GPS triangulation.

Windows 8 to include phone calling capability?
I love it when puzzle pieces seems to just fall into place. If the three pieces I found yesterday were any indication then it looks as if some Windows 8 slates will actually have the capability to make and receive phone calls through the cellular network. Cue the giant Windows Phone jokes

Short: Some of what Microsoft didn’t show of Windows 8
Microsoft may have blew the lids off Windows 8 in the first BUILD 2011 keynote but you can only fit so much in a 2 hour presentation, no matter how enthusiastic Steven Sinofsky can be. Near the end of the keynote, the presentation included a slide with hundreds of features that Microsoft claim they “didn’t get to show”. At normal scale, it was a little difficult to comprehend, but with the magic of magnification it reveals a few nuggets

Bing Maps: what a difference a little color makes
After I quite bluntly criticized the Bing Maps map style update of 2010 , it’s only fair to give praise when changes for the better are made. As LiveSide reports , Bing has begun rolling out the “ July 2011 Maps Style Update ” sporting more prominent borders and higher contrast colorset that addresses many of the issues I was concerned with. In addition, there’s also a much more conservative use of the transparent labels in favor of traditional solid labels to reduce clutter.

Microsoft Tag helps zombies overpower hippies
You may want to add Microsoft Tag to your arsenal against the ever-impending zombie apocalypse as a mobile-based alternative reality game played out a couple of months ago at the University of Colorado at Boulder has demonstrated. Posters for “Zombies vs Hippies” around the campus teased people to scan a tag with their mobile phone which led them to a site that provided some back-story to the game. Players had objectives that involved entering codes, scanning tags and group missions that scored points both for the team and themselves

Nano-coating technology: water-repellent on steroids
Microsoft Channel9′s Laura Foy recorded an amazing demo of a soon-to-be mass-market water-repelling technology being showcased at the Mobile World Congress 2011 . The infamous Arthur C. Clarke quote “any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic” couldn’t be more true here.

Microsoft patent reveals fast-boot dual-boot hybrid
A couple of years ago, various laptop manufacturers began implementing “instant-on” solutions to their mobile PCs with lite variations of Linux for a fast boot experience. Although it didn’t catch on very well, Microsoft took the idea to the next level with a hypervisor-enabled fast-boot dual-boot solution that makes much more sense. The patent application, “ FAST BOOTING A COMPUTING DEVICE TO A SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE ” outlines a boot process involving a general operating system like Windows alongside many special purpose operating systems that boots much more quickly to provide “appliance-like behavior” such as viewing entertainment content (TV, music, DVD)
