Skype hiring both C# and HTML5 devs for Windows 8 Metro app
It looks like if you can’t make your mind up about building a Windows 8 Metro-style application using either C# or HTML5, Skype seems to think you should just hire to build for both and let them fight it out. In either case, Skype seems to be readying a Windows 8 app for launch day.

The future of XBOX is apps, on your TV
Microsoft is hailing today’s XBOX dashboard update as “the next generation of TV entertainment”. They might not be first, Google beat them to it a year ago, but they’re certainly right and have a much bigger influence over how people interact with their TVs and media. Apps on XBOX 360 has been in the works for many years now and Silverlight has been long rumored to be the development framework of choice

Windows 8 to feature native SmartScreen file checking
As Microsoft anticipates a richer “apps” ecosystem for Windows 8 , they appear to be taking some extra steps to shield users from malicious applications with the introduction of an in-built file verification policy powered by the SmartScreen Filter . Originally a feature from Internet Explorer but now also (annoyingly) integrated in Windows Live Messenger 2011, SmartScreen is practically a dynamic list of known “illegal, viral, fraudulent, or malicious” URLs that Microsoft manually or algorithmally identifies . It uses this list to compare the link or executes a user visits or downloads, warning if there’s a match.

Microsoft Research reveals guts of Kinect technology
[See post to watch Flash video] Like a good artistic visualization, you can never get bored of looking at how the Kinect works behind-the-scenes. Of course pretty colors and dancing skeletons is useful, but the science behind just how the Kinect on XBOX 360 can recognize human poses in real-time from a depth-image from a single angle is fascinating too
