Design considerations for Windows 8 on HD slates
As Jensen Harris of the Windows User Experience team alluded to in his first day session of Metro design in Windows 8, high DPI displays may soon become mainstream, some of which he has personally seen behind closed doors. To make sure Windows 8 looks great on these displays for the desktop and slates, the system will have native scaling support for Metro-style applications to take advantage of them. The MSDN documentation “ Guidelines for scaling ” clarifies that although Windows 8 will automatically scale the user interface elements, layout and images, developers and designers (mostly designers) will still have to put in some work to ensure their applications are pixel perfect even at 208 PPI and beyond.

The “touch comfort” science behind Windows 8
In one of the first sessions of BUILD 2011 after an intense keynote of Windows 8 announcements, Jensen Harris of the Windows User Experience team took the opportunity in a “Big Picture Session” to elaborate on more details of Metro on Windows 8.

Windows 8 Explorer gets a ribbon, everybody gets a ribbon
I’m still reserving judgement on the ribbon UI in Windows 8′s Explorer application until I can spend some time using it. Nevertheless I can still appreciate a ribbon when I see one, a real one. Thanks to a heads up from Richard Burte , Ilana Smith, an Aussie (oi oi oi) Microsoft designer who works on the design team responsible for the Explorer ribbon, posted a photo teasing some of the 600 ribbons she had made for an internal event with the words “Windows Explorer” printed on.

The Fifth Avenue Apple Store is rightfully an impressive display of architectural design, but who’s to say no one can do better.

First looks at Microsoft Australia’s new digs
Microsoft Australia’s head office in the suburb North Ryde of Sydney might not compare to the Redmond campus by size, but a recent renovation makes it probably one of the most stylistic Microsoft office anywhere in the world. Thanks to a couple phone pictures courtesy of Deeps De Silva , Windows Product Marketing Manager, it appears the former cubicle-like layout has been completely replaced by an open-space format more commonly seen at trendy internet startups and Google. Although the renovations are still ongoing, “green leaves” seems to be the theme of the design, complete with what appears to be real tiny pot plants

My thoughts on “My thoughts on ChevronWP7″
I would be lying if I said I didn’t think some people would get the wrong idea about ChevronWP7 , which is why we went into great lengths to emphasis it is just an unlocking tool and even outlined our position on application piracy . What I didn’t think is that people would actually accuse us of advocating piracy itself. One post in particular, “My Thoughts On ‘ChevronWP7′” by Michael B

Pixar’s Renderman prototype is the best realization of the cloud computing vision yet
To be honest, Microsoft “cloud” demos usually put me to sleep, but not this one. At the PDC2010 keynote yesterday , Pixar Animation Studio ‘s Chris Ford demoed a cloud-hosted prototype of their Academy Award-winning Renderman solution that in my opinion makes the best case for cloud computing I’ve seen yet. The Windows Azure-powered prototype website, albeit extremely polished, is an example of how the company could easily transform its industry-leading product limited in reach by its hunger for resources into a service that would allow anyone from small studios to even indie filmmakers could then take advantage of the powers of Renderman, even if they don’t have the resources to establish and support a rendering farm.
